Memoirs of a Radiologist: Second Opinion Sonography (Ultrasound )

Similar to our last interaction, this time let's discuss the topic of Second Opinion Sonography or Ultrasonography, performed by my colleagues at TeleradiologyHub Expert Panel. The cost of this service can range from $60 to $390, depending on the panel level, with at least 4-6 radiologists working together. Let's learn in details - what is second opinion in sonography and why it is important we should seek it?

What is a Sonography?

Sonography, also known as ultrasound, is a medical imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of the inside of the body. Sonography technicians, also called Sonologists (in some places, the term is used interchangeably with Radiologist), operate specialized equipment, including a probe, to obtain images of various organs and tissues within the body. Sonography is commonly used during pregnancy to monitor fetal development, but it is also used to diagnose and monitor conditions in other parts of the body, such as the heart, liver, kidneys, and thyroid gland. Sonography is noninvasive and does not use ionizing radiation, making it a safe and preferred method of imaging for many medical conditions.

Second Opinion Sonography

Second opinion breast real-time ultrasonography involves repeating the breast real-time sonography with a different radiologist than the primary radiologist. The second look is usually done when the primary report is inconclusive, or when there are significant concerns about breast cancer. Ultrasonography is often used as an additional imaging modality for screening breast cancers, along with mammography. It is also the primary imaging modality for young women with dense breast tissue, where mammography may not be as effective due to safety concerns related to radiation exposure.

Essentials of Second Opinion Sonography

The breast is composed of various tissues, such as ducts, glands, and fat. When conducting a sonography, it can be challenging to differentiate cancerous tissue from normal breast tissue. In such cases, the radiologist must consider other factors such as the patient's history, complaints of lumps, family history of breast cancer, and breast density. Even with the slightest doubt, it is recommended to seek a second opinion. Some pathologies are so small or subtle that only experienced radiologists can detect them. Image perception can also differ between radiologists. While larger breast pathologies are more easily detectable, the skill lies in detecting smaller and more subtle diseases, which can be picked up by highly experienced and skilled radiologists.

Nowadays, many hospitals offer second opinions for patients who have undergone primary evaluations at other hospitals. The primary motive behind second opinions is to avoid missing a diagnosis or misdiagnosis, which can significantly impact the patient's further management.

Therefore, second opinion breast real-time ultrasonography is a crucial tool in detecting and diagnosing breast cancer. It involves repeating the sonography with a different radiologist and can help confirm or refute the primary report. Patients should not hesitate to seek a second opinion if they have any concerns or doubts about their breast health. Early detection is key, and second opinion sonography can help ensure that no pathology is missed. Additionally, hospitals should prioritize offering second opinion services to provide patients with comprehensive care and reduce the risk of misdiagnosis.
